To beat The Fallen, destroy his thrown projectile, avoid all three hits of his melee combo, and attack during the recovery after the final swing. His follow-up can turn toward Rose, so getting behind him does not make the rest of the combo harmless. Keep your first attempts focused on identifying the end of each attack before committing to damage.
The Fallen is the first major threat Rose encounters in the sewers beneath Paris. Winning grants the Holy Cross Arcana and the Arcane Whip ability, making this fight a progression gate as well as an early combat test. This guide covers the demonstrated counters; it does not assign an unverified HP total, damage requirement, or guaranteed no-hit setup.
Recognize the first boss

The Fallen's large arms, long reach, and winding attacks make distance easy to misjudge. A position that looks safe from the first strike may still be inside the final swing. Watch his arms through the entire sequence instead of treating each pause as a new opening.
Your most reliable early adjustment is to shorten your own attack strings. Two or three hits in an opening are a safer starting point than continuing until he begins moving again. The aim is to finish your attack while you still have time to respond to the next tell.
Counter the thrown cross
The thrown projectile can be destroyed with your sword or magic. You can also jump over it, but destroying it removes the returning projectile from consideration and makes the next exchange easier to read.
- Stop advancing when The Fallen prepares the throw.
- Face the incoming projectile and strike it with your weapon, or use magic to break it.
- Check the boss's next movement before spending the opening on another attack.
If you choose to jump instead, account for its return rather than immediately attacking after the first pass. Avoid using a slow spell simply because you have just avoided a different move: a new ranged attack can punish that commitment.
Survive all three melee swings
The melee combo has three attacks. You can slide through the first swing as his arm finishes winding back. He follows with another forward swing, then a third attack whose direction can change with your position.
The important detail is the final turn. If Rose has passed behind him, he can turn and follow up. Do not stop moving just because you crossed his body during the opening strike.
Two approaches are demonstrated:
| Approach | What to watch | When to attack |
|---|---|---|
| Slide through the sequence | The wind-up, then his orientation before the third swing | After the final swing has finished |
| Back away and keep your distance | The third swing reaches farther than the earlier safe-looking gap | Once the whole combo has ended |
Backing away is useful when you have space, but it needs a generous margin. The final strike can nearly reach a position that was comfortably outside the first two. If the room gives you little space behind Rose, prepare to move through rather than backing into a corner.
The longest clear opening comes after the third attack. Use that recovery for a short burst of damage. Trying to squeeze in an extra hit between the second and third swings is a less forgiving choice while you are still learning his timing.
Deal with the aerial swing and slam
When The Fallen swings above the arena, stay clear of the dangerous central landing area. Crouching or sliding lets Rose avoid the swinging attack. His landing is a separate threat, so continue watching him after the swing has passed.
An alternative demonstrated counter is to hit him while he is airborne. A correctly timed magic attack or sword strike can knock him down and create another opening. This requires earlier timing than simply reacting to his landing. A late attempt can leave Rose taking damage, so use the defensive option until you recognize the animation consistently.
A successful knockdown also provides a possible healing opportunity. Choose healing or damage according to your health; do not assume there is time for a potion, a spell, and another attack before he recovers.
Respond to the long whip attack
The Fallen also winds up a long-reaching whip attack. A forward dodge during its wind-up is a demonstrated way to avoid it. React to that preparation rather than waiting for the whip to occupy the arena.
This move is another reason to leave room for movement. Remaining at a fixed distance and attacking repeatedly does not answer both his close-range combo and his long-reaching attack. After each opening, return to watching his tell.

A practical attempt sequence
Use the same priorities each time you enter the room:
- Break the thrown cross rather than letting its return interrupt your next action.
- Count the complete three-hit combo and watch whether he turns for the last hit.
- Take a short damage window after the third strike.
- During aerial movement, avoid the swing and landing before counterattacking.
- Dodge the long whip on its wind-up.
- Heal during a clear recovery instead of trading health for another uncertain hit.
If repeated attempts are mostly being lost to the walk back, the Gameplay settings include an option to respawn in front of boss doors. Damage adjustments are also available. These are useful ways to concentrate on the fight itself while learning its timing.
What opens after the fight
The Holy Cross becomes an offensive Arcana, while Arcane Whip adds environmental movement as well as a special attack. Check the newly available ability before concluding that the next high platform is unreachable. The win also advances the early hunt for the keys leading toward the Catacombs.
Those rewards are enough to explain why this boss must be cleared early. His identity and later story dialogue are separate spoilers and are not needed to execute the counters above.
After the fight, review How to Use Whip Swing before following the later progression described in Catacombs Map and Gate Route.
